Economic studies for Churchill County, built on the county's own numbers

Independent economic studies for the governments, developers, and businesses of the Lahontan Valley, built on Churchill County's own federal data and designed to hold up when a lender or a funder reviews them.

Concentration is a location quotient (county sector share of employment divided by the national share), computed by Project Red Team. Covered jobs exclude the self-employed and some agricultural workers.

What the numbers show

Churchill County runs on roughly 8,900 covered jobs across about 630 establishments, at an average annual wage near $58,400, with employment up about 1.5 percent over the year. Retail is the largest private employer, followed by health care, public administration, transportation and warehousing, and the accommodation and food service a rural hub provides. The concentrations tell the county's real story: utilities employ people here at nearly 2.7 times the national rate, a direct read on the geothermal generation in the valley, and public administration runs close to twice the national share, reflecting the government and defense presence around Fallon. Arts, entertainment, and recreation and transportation also index well above the national average.

The Churchill County economy

Churchill County sits in the Lahontan Valley around Fallon, where irrigated agriculture supported by the Newlands Project has long anchored the economy, with alfalfa and hay, cattle, and dairy at its core. Naval Air Station Fallon, home to the Navy's air warfare training, is the county's largest single employer and shapes everything from housing to retail. Geothermal generation in the valley gives the county a utilities concentration well above the national average, a real and growing part of its base.

A new industrial tenant, a geothermal or solar addition, a food or agricultural processing venture, or an expansion tied to the base all turn on the same two questions: what the project genuinely returns to the county, and whether it pencils under the valley's real water, land, and labor conditions.

A project we could put through the engine here

Two live subjects sit in front of Churchill County. The first is the Churchill Hazen Industrial Park, a county-led site with more than two thousand acres available in its first phase and a much larger master plan, positioned to draw manufacturing, logistics, and energy tenants to the corridor. The second is the geothermal build-out that already shows up in the county's utilities concentration, including the Soda Lake and Patua plants and the Stillwater project that pairs geothermal with solar. A new tenant at the park or an added generating unit is the kind of project a county wants measured before it commits incentives, with the genuinely new jobs and output separated from activity that would have landed here regardless. Naval Air Station Fallon remains the county's largest single economic driver behind all of it.

Public-data path: regional input-output multipliers, free-data regionalized or drawn from a purchased BEA RIMS II order where a project supplies one, BLS QCEW and Census LODES for the local labor base, USDA NASS for the irrigated agricultural core, and the county's own economic-development and industrial-park records along with public utility filings for the geothermal fleet.

What we do for Churchill County

We produce the study first: economic impact (what a project brings to Churchill County, in jobs, output, and tax revenue, with local leakage handled honestly), feasibility and viability (whether it should move forward, measured with the finance a lender runs), and fiscal impact for public budgets and grant applications. Every engagement returns a full report, a one-page brief, a reviewer pack, and a decision package.

And if a study is already in hand, we review it: we inventory its quotable claims, attach the evidence, and tell you plainly what survives review before you quote it or fund against it. More on reading a study before you rely on it.

Local, and grounded in the record

National firms fly in, bill the travel, and price a county like Churchill out of the analysis it needs. We work across the interior West, we can be on-site, and we build every study on the county's measured federal record, the same BLS and Census data behind the numbers above, so the result traces to a public source and survives scrutiny.
